Dark Waters

Hazel laughed as the light flecks of snow landed on her nose. She noticed the drops of water it left on her fur and licked it off, what she didn't notice was the tom behind her, watching her with a smile. She spun around and ran in a circle, then noticed the tom.
Her eyes widen as she took a step back, a paw till not planted on the ground.
"Beautiful isn't it" The tom meowed, looking at the snow as it feel. He smiled to her and  leap onto the small table's humans had placed there years ago. He pushed away the snow and made a spot for Hazel.
Hazel jumped up and nuzzled him. "Mist, I've missed you." She meowed quietly. She licked his cheek and sat down.
After a few nice moments he turned to her,"Where are they?" Mist asked. Hazel knew he was talking about her family.
"Away." She mewed, looking at him to see what he was planning.
"Great," Mist meowed jumping down from the table, leaving a trail of his nimble paw prints in the snow. "because, I've got a idea." He smirked.  Leading her down to the pond beyond her fence. Hazel followed without a word, her paws too cold to object. She smiled and shook her head.
As they entered the clearing where the pond was she noticed some noises coming from a bush. Her ears pricked and she stopped moving.
Mist looked bad at her with a questioning look. "Haze? You okay?" Mist asked his friend.
Hazel stopped zoning out on the bush and turned to Mist. "Um, yeah I just thou-"
"Great, come on!" He nudged her forward. That's when Hazel noticed the sheet of thick ice on the pond. She giggled and stepped on the ice, Mist followed quickly. She turned to him and smiled.
She slipped and slided on the ice. When she got the hang of it she slide around gracefully in silence. Mist watched her in amazement. Hazel's quick moments inspired him. When she stoped he hurried onto the ice and touched her nose.
"I love you." He meowed quietly. He could barley keep his eyes open but he couldn't close them either.
Hazel smiled to Mist and licked his cheek. The bush russelled again. Hazel's head shot around. Mist looking as well this time. He narrowed his eyes and hissed. That's when it happened.
The bush irrupted. A cat with wide shoulders and blazing eyes lunged at Mist.
"This is what you get Mist! A claw in the face, like you did to Raven! A claw to the face!" The tom screeched raising a paw up, unsheathed claws. He brought it down to Mist's face. Hazel stared helplessly as her friend was attacked by someone she didn't know.
The ice under them started to crack and the next thing Hazel knew, Mist and the tom where under the water, the freezing water. She backed away. She thought quickly and just jumped right into the pond. The water, the freezing cold water, hit her like a wave of claws. She looked into the blackness of the water to find the moons light rested partly on Mist's tail. She swam towards it, ignoring her screaming lungs. She grabbed him, he was just barley breathing.
She looked into his eyes. They seemed peaceful. He moved his paw towards the surface and mouthed 'you should go back up.' Hazel shook her head. She can't leave him. Not with the news she still had to tell him. Her lungs screamed. Voices in her head kept repeating, 'Its not your time Hazel, go back up, this was meant.' or 'Hazel you have to protect them, Mist will see them grow from here, he knows already.".
So she let go. Then swam up. When she got to the air she gasped in pain. Her claws digging into the ice she scrambled up and heaved in air. She looking into the gigantic hole that was still in the ice. The last of Mist's body disappearing in the waters darkness. She hadn't even bothered to look for the tom that attacked Mist. The tears were stinging as they threatened to fall.
"No, this cant happen." She kept telling herself, but she knew it was true. She mewed quietly in goodbye and sulked back to her home. She was greeted by a towel and a hot air machine. She lied down in her bed and looked out the window wishing Mist was still next to her.
